According to the Classification Standards for Foreigners Working in China, the types of work for foreigners in China are divided into three categories: Category A, Category B and Category C.
Category A
refers to foreign high-end talents, which are an important support for opening up to the outside world and introducing talents. Category C
refers to other foreign nationals. This category of personnel mainly refers to foreign personnel engaged in short-term work in China or other foreign personnel who meet the needs of the domestic labor market in accordance with national policies and regulations. This type of person is difficult to apply for, and there are some specific conditions that need to be met in order to apply for a work permit in China.
Points system Calculation
To apply for a work permit to come to China, foreigners must meet at least Category C requirements. According to the points system for foreigners’ work permits in China, the points for foreigners are calculated as follows:
- The domestic employer pays the annual salary (10,000 yuan): this is the most important calculation item in the points, and the maximum score for this item is 20 points, and the higher the annual salary, the higher the points.
- Educational attainment or vocational skill qualification: This item can obtain a maximum of 20 points, and the requirement is to obtain a higher education or professional and technical position qualification certificate.
- Work experience related to the current position: A maximum of 20 points will be awarded for this item, and work experience is required to be relevant to the job.
- Annual working hours in China: This item can be awarded up to 15 points, and the longer the time you work in China, the higher the points.
- Chinese Proficiency: This is an extra point, up to a maximum of 5 points.

Foreigners with a total score of 85 or more can be recognized as foreign high-end talents (Category A). This kind of talent has a very high technical level and management ability and has made important contributions to China’s economic development and opening up to the outside world. This group of talents enjoys various conveniences and benefits, and the processing time is shorter, and they can apply for a longer work permit (3-5 years).
Foreigners with a total score of 60 or more but less than 85 can be recognized as foreign professionals (Category B). These talents have excellent performance in technology, scientific research, management and other fields. The review and approval time is longer than that of Category A, and the validity period of the approval is generally one year, and the following year needs to be extended.
Foreigners with a total score of less than 60 are recognized as other foreign nationals (Category C). Such personnel mainly refer to foreign personnel engaged in short-term work in China or other foreign personnel who comply with China’s policies and regulations. It is difficult to apply, and there are some specific conditions that need to be met in order to apply for a work permit to China.
